History of Miller C. & Co.

Our Founder
Michael S. Miller has spent over 22 years in the Department of Defense, having served both inside and outside the Pentagon. He started his career as a combat aviator in the U.S. Air Force during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. After this, he spent four years with Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) testing new technologies and training senior commanders how to employ new intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities in modern warfare. Michael moved to the D.C. area to become a Senior Advisor for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and Strategic Command, where he advised the President and Secretary of Defense on global military operations. While in this position, he was requested to serve as a Senior Advisor for the Secretary of Defense at the ISR Task Force, where he provided oversight in advancing and accelerating the development of over $12B in innovative technologies for global military operations. In this role, he was regularly consulted to provide input on operational decisions for the Secretary of Defense, Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence (USDI), and the National Security Council. In 2017, he transitioned to Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation (VT-ARC), where he currently serves as the Director of the Engineering, Test & Evaluation Division to lead the development, execution and growth of the corporation’s research, development and engineering of advanced wireless communications and sensing systems. Prior to this, Michael was the Director of Operations for a mid-sized defense contracting company.
A Family History of Entrepreneurs, Innovators & Hard Working Americans
Michael’s family comes from a long line of dedicated, hard working American’s, descended from European immigrants (Germany and Great Britain) who settled in America during the late 1800s. As a result of this rich heritage, he developed a strong work ethic, a business-oriented mindset and a rich patriotism for the greatest country which has ever existed. His grandfather worked at the forefront of several telecommunication innovations during his career at Bell, AT&T and DuPont. Michael’s great uncle was a successful businessman who founded the Rohr Inc. aerospace engineering corporation, which designed and manufactured the mounts for the famous Norden M-9 bombsights during WWII. His great-grandfather, Dan Crader, was a chemical engineer and successful businessman at DuPont Co. for over 43 years. During WWII, his desire to serve in the U.S. military was curtailed due to his critical role in the explosives department at a facility in Birmingham, AL. Throughout the remainder of his successful career, he served in several key positions where his ideas and business acumen were critical in running the DuPont nylon plant in Seaford, DE and in the development of a process for the fast production of military uniforms. The “C.” in Miller C. is in honor of maintaining his family name since his only children were daughters who took on their husband’s last name.
